From recruitment start-up to Europe’s leading life science staffing organisation in just ten years, this is Clinical Professionals’ journey.
Clinical Professionals was incorporated in 2006 in the thriving City of Reading with the intention of focusing on clinical research recruitment in the UK with the ambition of developing the business towards placing candidates throughout Europe.
The owners realised there was a gap in the market for a recruitment company that was staffed in part by people who had come from industry – enabling them to fully understand the intricacies of the pharma and clinical research market – a policy that has remained to this day.
Aiming to create a top three global pharmaceutical staffing business the growing team and its experience in the industry quickly brought results. Clinical Professionals deployed its first 10 contractors in the UK in 2007, with the first European contracts the following year. Further European success led to the setting up of Clinical Professionals’ international office in London.
Our first employee Jenny Hatchett joined the company as a new graduate in late 2006 and by 2011 had won the Pharma Times ‘Recruiter of the Year’ award two years running. Jenny is a true success story at Clinical Professionals and is now one of the company’s Divisional Directors, testament to the company’s commitment to staff retention, training and career progression.
In order to further develop the company’s Medical Affairs service, in March 2009 Clinical Professionals acquired Only Medics Recruitment Ltd, a specialist pharmaceutical physician recruiter, Only Medics is now a market leading provider of Physicians to the Pharmaceutical Industry.
With the continued expansion and opening of branches across Europe Suzanne Swan joined the Clinical Professionals business in 2012 as Director for the European Business units to continue the incorporation and expansion across the EU.
By 2011, Clinical Professionals had deployed over 100 contractors in the field, with many having stayed with the company for over three years. 2011 also saw the team expanding to 35 employees, with Yvette Cleland joining as Group Managing Director. In April 2014 Yvette took on the role of CEO for the Clinical Professionals Group supported by Glen Hall as COO.
In 2011 the company was ranked within the top 50 of the UK’s fastest growing small businesses in the Sunday Times Fast Track 100. Sales in that year had grown an impressive 70% vs. the previous year. In 2013/14 Clinical Professionals was cited as a Company to Watch in the Times Best Companies to work for.
Since being formally recognised as one of the top small businesses in the UK, Clinical Professionals have continued to grow in size and stature. In 2012 a third office was opened, this time in Stuttgart in Germany, to cater for the expanding business in Europe’s powerhouse economy.
This expansion coincided with the company taking on its 40th staff member, as well as the establishment of an internal training department that could respond directly to customer demand. In 2014 Clinical professionals took on its 60th member of staff and will continue to expand through out 2014/15 to meet the growing needs of our client base in the UK and EU.
Things have gone from strength to strength for the company and in 2013 Clinical Professionals won a further Functional Service Provider (FSP) contract with a global top 10 pharmaceutical company, demonstrating our ability to provide a flexible workforce while offering significant cost savings. This success is largely attributed to the senior level industry experience that Clinical Professionals staff are able to bring to these partnerships. To further support this growth and expertise in 2014 Nikki Harrison joined the Clinical Professionals Group from Takeda where she had been Associate Director and managed clinical research teams on a global scale. Nikki is Director of FSP & Compliance within the Clinical Professionals Group.
In the sixth company move in as many years due to our continued growth, Clinical Professionals’ head office relocated to a bespoke 80 desk office in central Reading (UK), while the London international office also moved to larger premises to facilitate our continued expansion.
Today, Clinical Professionals is Europe’s largest independent pharmaceutical research and development staffing organisation, with a turnover of €14m and partnerships with eight out of the top 10 global pharmaceutical companies, as well as medical device organisations, emerging biotechs, Clinical Research Organisations (CROs), medical communications agencies, regulatory bodies and research charities.
As of May 2014 team is 65 strong across three offices, with candidates placed in 15 countries around Europe. Staff development remains one of the key elements of the business strategy, with high levels of staff retention one of the reasons that the company is able to offer such excellent continuity of service to clients.
Detailed market research carried out in early 2013 found that 95% of hiring managers rate Clinical Professionals as consistently superior in quality, speed of response, staff retention and communication. In addition to this, nine out of 10 customers rate the company as their most trusted partner.
During 2014 Clinical Professionals continued their growth with another office opening in Brussels and a branch in Southern Ireland. The Belgian and Irish offices have become further milestones in Clinical Professionals’ expansion across Europe, with its locations helping to grow its professional operation.
Clinical Professionals’ Mission Statement neatly sums up future plans:
“Our mission is to be the global partner of choice for life science staffing solutions. Trusted knowledgeable and quality focused.”
