Lab Services Technician

Purpose of the Job:
To provide a centralised support service to all of the Technical Department as required, according to the principles of Good Control Laboratory Practice
Principal Accountabilities (duties):
To carry out sample collections from B.27, and complete initial log in as required by Sections.
To perform and maintain procedures to ensure effective treatment and disposal of contaminated laboratory waste according to standard operating procedures.
To perform and maintain procedures to prepare, dispense and sterilise media according to standard operating procedures.
To operate autoclaves and appropriate equipment according to standard operating procedures.
To carry out mapping of temperature controlled areas.
To assist with the organisation of the Control Laboratory Central Store, and carry out stock controls and ordering as required.
To despatch items requiring external calibration or maintenance.
To assist the Senior Technician with stock control to ensure adequate supplies of clean equipment and media are available.
To assist in the provision and arrangements for the laundry service.
To assist in routine data collection and analysis including for example, statistical process control.
To operate a variety of computer software packages for data analysis and related applications.
To assist with documentation preparation and review, under appropriate supervision.
To clean, calibrate and maintain equipment, and prepare and maintain reagents, standards or control samples.
To comply with all BPL Company Policies in particular the laboratory health and safety instructions, using or wearing the protective equipment or clothing provided.
To assist with the training of junior staff in routine procedures.
To assist with the introduction and evaluation of novel procedures using defined protocols.
Principal Resources Controlled:
1. To be responsible for the use of consumables, reagents and culture media within the laboratory and to report any difficulties to the appropriate supervisor.
Planning and Organisation:
To be able to plan out own working day.
Contact with Others:
With other staff in Technical, Production, Engineering and R&D departments.
Major Challenge of the Job:
To perform a variety of calibration techniques.
To ensure sample collections are carried out as required.
To ensure that external media is correctly received and sampled.
To prepare in house media and reagents as requested.
Knowledge, Skill and Experience Required:
A relevant degree (or equivalent) or equivalent laboratory experience.
Decision making Authority:
To plan own work on a day to day basis based on the targets of the section
To cover for other staff in absences and cover own work in planned absences.
Other Information:
To assist other members of the Laboratory Services Unit as required.
